Slow Down Breath & Live
As I waited for the train and listened to the music through my earphones, everything slowed down like a slow motion video. It all seem like one of those sad or memorable music videos, listening to the rain and the people passing by. I like always was the

10 Read Alouds for Preschool
10 Read Alouds for Preschool
Here are my top 10 read aloud for preschoolers. These books are so great for children and of course, I love them as well. I think it's really important if the teacher loves the book as well because it kind of brings to live the characters and the story.
Student Teaching- Week #8: "Thanksgiving - Giving Thanks"
This is just a short glimpse into what I did on Monday for my second observed lesson. My advisor came to observed me and basically grade me on the way I teach, interact with the children and how I work with the class management.
On Monday, I introduce the children to the Thanksgiving week, by teaching them five "tier 3" sight words related to the topic. The vocabulary words used were : Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, Native Americans, Feast, and Harvest. The chosen words were part of the book I read, Thanksgiving Day Thanks by Laura Malone Elliot and Lynn Munsinger.

Before I read the book, I asked the kids what they thought Thanksgiving meant and what were they thankful for. Their responses varied throughout both morning(green) and afternoon(red) class.
( It was so funny, how one of the boys in the afternoon class was thankful for "girls". I found it both cute and funny ).
As I read along, the children learned the different vocabulary words, which were represented using pictures of the words. The picture I used for this poster, were found on Pinterest and Google Image.
During the pre-assessment, I was able to learn about the students' previous knowledge of Thanksgiving and implement educational objectives for which the children had to recall information from experience or familiar topic to answer the questions and speak audibly to express their thoughts, feeling and ideas about the topic. Some children were aware of words such as; Thanksgiving and Harvest, but most didn't know about the other words. These vocabulary words were explained during the read aloud by showing pictures. The sight words were reviewed and read aloud at the end of the lesson for a summative assessment and better comprehension.
At the end of the lesson, we talked about what we do on Thanksgiving and how we celebrate Thanksgiving. The children then worked on a turkey paper bag, which I forgot to take picture of the beautifully and unique puppet that the children created.
I hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving festivity like I did with my family. If you don't mind, please share how you taught the history of Thanksgiving for those who are teachers or how you celebrate it.

Student Teaching- Week #7 " Halloween Week"
Friday, Oct. 28
As part of my Student Teaching experience, I have to observe a Kindergarten classroom for 20 hours during this semester. I love Ms.J so much that I have decided to visit her classroom for a longer period. I believe that the experience I will get with her is one-of-kind and I'm glad I was placed with such a great teacher.
This Friday, as part of the Halloween week Ms.J read a Halloween story named " The 13 Nights of Halloween" and use cut-out characters of the book for the children to act as she read the story. I was allowed to the take some pictures of the materials, as well of the reading they did as part of Jumpstar's Read for a Record and children's work.

Monday, Oct. 31
Today is Halloween and all the children came dress-up and were so excited to show us their costumes and talk about who they were dressing at. They all looked very cute and I loved the fact that they were so excited to go trick-or-treating, but I must say that this is the most tiresome day that I had experience as a student teacher so far. The morning class was super-excited and this whole excitement led to one of the student to vomit and w kind of lost control of the class, as some of the children wanted to show their costumes to the other teachers and children who were doing a little parade in the classroom to show their costumes and it just got a bit out of control. I now understand why Ms. L says that this is one of the craziest days at school!
As part of today's activity, Ms. L read the "Ten Timid Ghost" and used felt paper puppet as a visual aid.

Student Teaching- Week #6 " A Day Full of Laughter"
(This happened on the week of Oct.24 . I have been so busy that I haven't had the time to publish this post.)
Today, I introduced the color white by reading Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by James Dean & Eric Litwin and singing the white song. It was a success from the song to the book, the children were laughing and singing along, I tried to make the lesson as fun as possible by adding movement. During the reading, I did my best by singing the song in the book and although the children thought it was silly they truly enjoyed and laughed every time I sang it. The afternoon class even sang it with me and later throughout the day. I felt both happy and excited that they liked the lesson and learned from our small story sequencing activity and measuring activity, the children measured their lunch bags and other toys during snack and center time, which served as an assessment for myself and the students as I knew that they understood what was taught.
This is the activity I did for "Story Sequencing", I found it on Pinterest. It was originally a worksheet , so I decided to enlarge it for a more interactive activity. ( You can find the worksheet on my Preschool Lessons & Activities Board on Pinterest).
This is the other activity I did, "Measuring objects". I used two shoes for the children to compare by size and color and also did an activity by measuring each other, I had four children and with the help of the class, we order them by height. So, vocabulary words such as largest, medium, and smallest was use throughout the lesson.
He smiled at me, such a sincere smile from a boy who is full of energy and knowledge at such a young age. They truly are my first class, I have come to love their mismatch personalities and made-up stories that sometimes doesn't make any sense but cracks you up. These children are exceptional and they tried their best in their own way. And, just like them, I have to try my best all the time to teach them, motivate them, inspire them, and create new experiences for them.
Student Teaching- Week #5 " Learning from my Mistakes"
(This happened on the week of Oct.17 . I have been so busy that I haven't had the time to publish this post.)
Today I felt like the first day again, in the sense of teaching the lesson. I was tired and nervous and not prepared to take the challenge of teaching the lesson. I wasn't aware of how important learning preschool songs was, I mean I knew these songs, but at the same time I didn't and I felt discouraged by it. Ms. L asked me to do the routine with the children and although I have been observing her for four weeks now and knew the routine and what to do, I froze and forgot what I was supposed to do. I felt discouraged by the fact that I couldn't do a simple task like that and felt that Ms. L was a bit disappointed. In the afternoon, it was a bit better, but I couldn't sing the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" song or read the book using the rhyme of the song either. I did ask the children to help me out and they were surprisingly happy to do so and that made me feel grateful to them, but I know that I need to prepare myself before I do my student teaching experience. I'm not there to only observe but to also take charge of my performance as a future educator and learn from my mistakes, and I sure did learn from today's experience. I think that teaching involves more than loving to teach children, you need to know your content and feel confident. It's alright if once in a while you need to ask for help, even if has to be from your own children. If there is something that I learned today is that they are willing to help out and even excited to do so.
Although I felt discouraged and insecure, I learned that to be a better teacher, you must first evaluate yourself based on your performance and knowledge and then create a plan to deal with this and change or create a strategy to make the experience a learning one for both the students and yourself.

If anyone is curious, this was the book that we used for the lesson. As an activity, we used black yarn to create a big spider wave, the children enjoyed this and we have lots of fun, even though I wasn't feeling so great about it.
I know that once in a while we all feel discouraged by our performances but I will like to know how you deal with it. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
